Mapping community governance
The images here are taken from a KinShip workshop held in November 2024, thinking about community governance and how that would work in the KinShip project.
The Council of Communities, a concept developed during the workshop, marks a new phase within the KinShip project as it enters its fourth year. KinShip is a durational public artwork—an evolving form of social art that prioritizes processes, relationships, and shared experiences as essential to its purpose and meaning.
This phase represents a shift from an artist-led approach, where LennonTaylor conceptualised and modelled the creative process with support from the KinShip working group, to a community-led phase. Now, a council of communities will take the lead, embracing the artistic process and shaping a socially engaged artwork that reflects their vision and leadership.
A number of communities have been involved since KinShip’s inception, and they will form the foundation of the Kinship Council of Communities, guiding and supporting this transformation. The Council is envisioned as a flexible and inclusive body, welcoming all communities eager to participate in the artistic practices of KinShip under collective guidance.
